you could try some freeware see if they are good enough

I dunno about the editor but powerdvd was a good player,.. i think they did an editor..

maybe with professional editions worth looking at a trial demo so you can get to grips with it to make a better choice. especially if you intend to spend alot of money its worth while do alot of investigating on your own personal preference

if you have a mac, final cut pro is the best, also try the adobe video editing software (i forgot what it's called).
The software i'm currently looking into is Sony Vegas 8, it's really good software. it costs 600 dollars but at academicsuperstore.com you can get it for 300 dollars.

Any version of Pinnacle Studio. Seriously. It's easily the best. Specially if you're working with green screens.

Studio Ultimate 11 is about $129.99 and that's probably the newest one.
