I started a website that is basically a community for programmers. It's not much, but if anyone want's to check it out, it's at here.

I can get a free domain name in a couple days, but until then I'm stuck with a subdomain.[/url]

Definateley part time programmer me since well I couldn't learn all that and leran what I do do..

BUT... I have a suggestion

Definateley include asp.net.. I know alot of people like to try out php as a cheap free option but asp is pretty much free now and well its if not better.. Definateley good for businesses which can therefore do it all free.

PHP is pretty good. They have more support, and more functions. I haven't really used ASP yet, but I'll look at it.

ASP has much more support!

and as many functions id say (if not more)

plus can run data driven apps better?

Dunno where you got all that from :???

edit: not that I am disrespecting PHP it is very good I am sure

I just think ASP has a greater future, so its worth a look

I built my last company intranet on it linked emails documents databases driven apps, a few databases catalogies linking to files etc..

Hang on thats liek me posting a post from Microsoft saying why windows is better than Mac or visa versa.

but those links are flawed why

same old arguments

I coudl easily post 50 threads saying the other things.

I spent 3 months contemplating which I should choose to work with

despite what your links say

ASP was CHEAPER to use.. why because I had all the stuff there. It intergrated with everything perfectly.

Now I did consider PHP but I woudl have had to setup and perhaps arrange server costs etc..

You are totally generalising.

I am not trashing this or that I am just suggesting for your site to have asp.net 2.0 or 3.0 now in.

3.0 especially its diffinatley the future.

edit i was talking about asp.net as a whole by the way

I am trying to learn some of this stuff to help update the intranet now and expland it...

thing is I want to make a copy of what you done otherwise ill mess it up..

I dunno personally I think I shoudl specialise, you either are a network admin or engineer or you are a programmer.. thast why I am tryiong to get some understanding of it.. but no way am i trying to learn it all...

although if i get teh basics down, i think i could make a good little app for work??

I didn't actually code this, I just downloaded wordpress and smf and threw them together. But if you wanted to do something for work, php is pretty easy to learn. You can also find LOTS of free simple scripts that can be vastly improved by googling.

Well it already exists so I am not going to start again

besides i could neevr make it as good, for them this was a massive invention to recieve an intranet lol

But now it kinda needs changes and updates and with this in mind I might add a few things to it.

From what I understand she downloaded a template just a rough guide them stripped it all out and designed everything all teh graphics and stuff, then used part design and part code to knock it together. It is really good..

If I only look at how things were done and then if I look at the coding I hope to pick it up... thats a good way right?

You will develop locally, so when you do that grab a copy of the entire intranet folder off the host server which teh bname escapes me now.. ( I moved it to a better server before I left and cannot remember the name)

your best ooption is to take two copies locally, one which you will make teh changes and upload ./.. and one where you test things and trying things out ya know, things which might be bigger.

I found like you two said stick something in, look at teh code if something I am stuck on try to get example of what else has done and then edit teh code to suit.. and by doing that and reading it.. you start to get an idea of how it goes together..

But you cannot devote your hwole time to learning languages and devloping if your going for networking and systems admin/ engineer.. I learnt that along time ago.. still its a nice hobbie and a string to anyones bow.
