Speaking of sets, I watched Ben-Hurr, the old one, last night. It was quite impressive to watch realizing that they made detailed sets and props. These days they only make that sort of stuff for disney land for children's slides.

My step dad and I are huge movie buffs, and whenever we discuss cgi, he brings up this movie. He always says, no matter how drawn into a movie you are, you are ALWAYS aware of HOW the movie was made at some point in it. His crowning point: when you see thousands of people standing in the desert in Ben Hurr, they're there. The gravity of that scene can NEVER be replicated by cgi, just emulated - a rouge that we can ultimately weed out which ruins most movies. My present example is the original LOTR vs. the Hobbit movies. The physical effort put into the 1st LOTR movie was 10X that of the whole Hobbit triology. Sorry fans, and Peter Jackson.

I'm not even touching failed cgi attempts at Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the boat ride...cgi crap..just play a moving projector...) or the new Wizard of Oz movie with James Franco. The only cgi victories I will EVER acknowledge: Avatar, the new Alice and Wonderland, and lightsabers (although they can be almost as well with manual labor called rotoscoping).

Not to derail this topic, but on what you said shink, J.J Abrams accomplished lightsaber effects by, well, actually having them hold glow sticks with actual sparks. Creating a 'realistic' fantasy device like a lightsaber is somewhat of a redundant thing to say, but if it were real, I imagine they'd look similar to their depiction in the force awakens.

True..., but its just movie guys, I like to just enjoy them :P , we're way past the old days of trying to make everything realistic, that's just movie industry works  , now if everything could be real and stuff, that'd be neato, then... I'd grab ship and haul jets off planet earth and fly into the galaxy, I'd do this new York minute, so what if its CGI and stuff, just enjoy it for what it is, cause its it's entertainment with out it they're could be no movies today and stuff, we all love fantasy worlds, that someday could indeed be replicated as a real ship, I know boats and pirate ships can be replicated, you just need the tools for it, but... ships that's the hard part, we'd need to fly off earth to find the material treasures , that are just out there to be dugged and retrieved and built , there could be thousand materials out there just waiting for be scoped and picked and stuff and made into something, am just being pessimistic and optimistic about stuff like that, cause someday it will be true and we can go anywhere we wanted someday, adventure of explorer of galaxy is just awaitin for us to do it. :P

Just enjoying movies is great when the movie is enjoyable. IE no, we can't reproduce the events of interstellar or avatar so cgi is needed, and they did it well. With that, it's really important that the crew making the movie doesn't go overboard on cgi or approve clearly crappy-looking stuff....it literally ruins movies, or is the consolation prize of a crappy movie. To me, there's a difference between using cgi because it's necessary, and using cgi because it's easier. It might not ruin the experience for you, but it definitely does for me. The pirates movies use this stuff tastefully to generally create impossible villians but the alien movies existed without much cgi, like star wars, its not needed. Animatronic aliens > cgi aliens. Animatronic dinos > cgi dinos.

yah I know that alien covernant looks extremely good, I've been reading up on other peoples videos about the movie and easter eggs and stuff, I even heard at the end of Prometheus, or towards the end, Shaw was being turned into a alien, that's just one speculation , then they we're examining the differences between alien and the original aliens, the size differences and stuff, , how these aliens are much larger and different things on its back, there's alien called a 'deacon alien' & 'Protoalien' & 'back burster' & Ultra Alien (which you saw standing on side of ship it was massive and stuff)
