My two cents:
KotOR 1 is basically the original trilogy made uber awesome. Has more character development (and better characters for that matter) than their OT counterparts. I mean, compare the characters.
Han Solo - Carth.
Han was a simply mercenary who owed a hutt some cash. He later struggles with the decision of whether he should stay with the Rebellion against the empire or not. He decides to stay, and helps Luke Skywalker blow up the Death Star.
Carth Onasi is a high ranking Republican captain who lost his family on Telos and seeks revenge while trying to stay true to his motives of destroying the Sith threat. He joins up with Revan and helps him and Bastila destroy the Star Forge.
Carth wins this.
R2-D2 - T3-M4
R2-D2 is an astromech droid that lived through the Clone Wars and was Anakin Skywalker's personal assistance droid. After the Clone Wars, he was taken by Bail Organa and later to Leia Organa to be implanted with the Death Star plans.
T3-M4 was a high tech astromech droid built by an all powerful planetary crime lord for the sole purpose of breaking into a Sith Military base and assist one of the Crime lord's men with his built-in weaponry to steal launch codes to pass a sith blockade. He later assists Revan in escaping from Darth Malak's flagship the Leviathan through his amazing technical knowledge.
T3-M4 wins.
Canon Chewbacca and Zaalbar...does it need saying?
KotOR 2 does have better writing in my opinion, but has worse execution. Like honestly, Kreia might as well be THE BEST Star Wars character ever written. Her philosophies on the Force are just incredible, and she is the only person who I believe understands it more than anyone else, even Yoda.
(Not to mention even Yoda has forgotten the true ways of the Jedi)
"The weapon of a Jedi, a lightsaber is..." - Yoda
"Ah, a lightsaber...The weapon of the Sith, and a tool for the Jedi..." - Kreia
(Shouldn't Yoda know that weapons are not for Jedi? Jedi aren't meant to battle. They have lightsabers to defend and to use to their advantage, ex. A person about to hit someone? React quickly and block the blaster shot / blade with your lightsaber. You are trapped under a pile of rocks? Use your lightsaber to cut them down. Thank god Yoda learned this lesson after the Clone Wars, but again, this was common knowledge to Kreia, step it up Yoda.)
SWTOR is pretty good in my opinion in terms of it's own story. In terms of continuing the KotOR story? Bad. I mean, It's standalone stories from what I've seen so far are pretty good. All I've seen is the Jedi Knight and Jedi Consular. The True Sith Empire and the Plague Master who corrupts minds. Pretty cool stories. But the KotOR related stories, bleh.
(mind you, there is one cool story I remember that tied in with KotOR...we see good ol' Rakatan in a box. The one that was imprisoned for so long that his body became dust and required a willing host to escape. The box that Revan handed off to the Hutt on Tatooine. I found that kind of fun, he was a cool character and was always fun to talk to every time I played the game.)
