WARNING THIS IS GOING TO BE A VERY LONG POST. ONLY READ IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS TOPIC OR VIDEO GAMES IN GENERAL!
Since I am trying to be a Game Designer/Game Programmer. I am personally going to talk about the pros and cons of ALL 3 Consoles (and relate them to the PC in a few sentences) and if any of them are OR will be worth your time. As I said up top this is going to be long but this should answer ANY questions you have of any of the 3 consoles. Im going to go in order of release date to be fair.
XBox 360:
Cost: USA $299(core), $399(premium), $479(elite)
Manufacturer: Microsoft
1Generation: Seventh generation era
First available: 22 November 2005
Controller input: 4 maximum (wired or wireless or combination of either)
Online service: Xbox Live (USA 1month$7.99 3month$19.99 12months$49.99)
Units sold Worldwide: 10.4 million sold as of December 31, 2006
Top-selling game: Gears of War (As of now)
Backward compatibility: 336 Xbox games (requires hard drive)
Pros: It was released one year earlier than any other Seventh generation console give it a "head start" effect which guarantees more games readily available by the time the other 2 consoles launch. The Console itself is powerful with is triple core Xenon processor and extreme bandwidth. The graphics really speaks for itself as some games truly look great on the system. It was the first system to feature a "true" online fan base with its introduction of Xbox Live, though it was far from the first. (online play for consoles was thought to happen for the Dreamcast
). As for games the console has already had many hit games which have sold over a million copies just in its first year(Gears of War is current top seller with 4 million copies already sold) meaning you can always find a good game on the console to suit your taste. Since the Xbox360 is based from Microsoft creating games for the system is generally a breeze and even has Microsoft XNA with development tools made for game development teams(However it cost $99 to upload created content to the Xbox360). Xbox360 has its Dashboard interface which utilizes tabs to navigate its OS which is fairly easy to understand and use. Xbox Live itself has many features such as its Marketplace and Arcade(one you can buy Game trailers, Game Demos, Dashboard themes, ect. The other lets you play classic and some not so classic games on the console.) Xbox360 has also lately been receiving contracts from game developers that were to be released only for the PS3 which takes away Sony's "exclusiveness" they once had with the PS2
Cons: Xbox360 has had its share of technical problems with its early releases of its console and has had thousands of people complain about its crashing. It even has a "Ring of Death" which is when red lights flash on the front of your console (the more red lights the bigger the problem is) which can rang from simply restarting the after letting it cool to having to send it to Microsoft to get it repaired. Microsoft has even stated that they would fix any system released before 2006 for free (this has been recently stopped however). Also Xbox360 has been prone to actually scratching disc all on its own leaving DVD's and even games completely unusable. Second though the system only cost $299 (core system) the price needed for Xbox Live and Xbox Marketplace can add up to your system costing almost as much as a ps3 though this is solely user based as you dont have to pay for these things.
General Information: Xbox360 has been released with 3 different versions. Xbox360 Core, Xbox360 Premium, and Xbox360 Elite.
The Core only $299 is the basic system which comes bundled with composite video cables, capable of only SDTV resolutions. The Core may output HD signals up to 1080p when connected to separately sold Component or VGA cables. It may also use a separately sold 20, or 120GB hard drive.
The Premium cost $399 The Xbox 360 Premium includes all the features of the Xbox 360 Core and also includes a detachable 20GB Hard Disc Drive (to store Xbox Live Arcade games, game demos, ect.) provide compatibility with Xbox games and store game data. It also includes a Wireless Xbox 360 Controller, Xbox Live headset, Xbox Media Remote (in some regions) and a pre-paid 12 month subscription to Xbox Live Gold.
The Elite cost $479 and has all the features of premium and will have HDMI output and a 120 GB hard drive in a black case, and it includes an HDMI cable, a black game controller, and a black headset. Thought to be "Limited Edition" It will be a mainstay on the Xbox360 line.
Personal Opinion: If you have ever played console games before this system is the top of the line when it comes to conventional consoles. Not trying to innovate it provides basic console gameplay that most already know and love. Besides being wireless the controller is nothing special and features a rumble pack(which became almost standard ever since it became popular with the Nintendo 64 rumble pack and Sony's Dualshock1). Its basically what consoles have been about for years and has a big library of games. If your not willing to break yourself trying to get a PS3 or if you dont want to be flaying around a wii-mote cause your too lazy to do so
then this system should be your number one choice. Its a solid console which has had time to be fixed over the years and with games still coming strong its your safest bet on a console.
PlayStation3:
Manufacturer: Foxconn, ASUSTeK for SCEI
Generation: Seventh generation era
First available: 11 November 2006
Controller input: Max. 7 SIXAXIS (wireless, wired, or combination of each)
Online service: PlayStation Network(Free)
Units sold: 3.2 million+
Units shipped: 5.5 million+
Top-selling game: Resistance: Fall of Man(as of now)
Backward compatibility: PlayStation games and PlayStation 2 games
Pros:The Playstation 3 offers amazing graphics due to its cell processor. and has an awesome fool proof interactive OS system. It also allows users to INSTALL there own OS systems (such as Linux) for your own personal touch. You can also do alot of things on your PS3 such as connect memory cards and take data such as music, pictures, game data, ect. and store it on the hard drive. Some games can even be installed directly onto the hard drive(usually taking up around 4 gigs) to help with load times for the game itself. The hard drive itself is even upgradeable as it uses a standard SATA connection. Though with its experimental technology game developers cries for help have been heard by Sony and they have been releasing developing kits and tools needed to help with developing PS3 games. The next kit PlayStation Edge will even have a compiler (which will significantly lower load times). The System is Fully backwards compatible with nearly every game released for the system(though some legacy playstation games are not compatible with there special controllers.) Sony has been doing a fabulous job with updating there software. Though lacking in games the system still has a good line up of games to come(Metal Gear, Lair, God of War 3, ect.) that recently have been slated to only come to the PS3.
Cons: To start off there has been extensive reports of PS3's crashing even after only being used for the first or second time. This is normally caused by overheating which has been a problem with the system. To combat this a number of third party companies have come out with cooling fan peripherals to help with this problem but these also make the system even bigger and harder to place (the system is bigger than the original Xbox). Another downside is its controller itself. Though trying to be "innovative" with its SIXAXIS it feels more or less like a bad copy of the Wii's functionality and the controller has lack of rumble due to Haptics developer Immersion Corporation suing Sony for its patent infringement. It as also removed Force Feed back from its other peripherals such as steering wheels. PlayStation3 Sales have dropped dramatically since its launch and being behind Xbox360 and Wii in sales the head of gaming at Sony has even stepped down and the PlayStation3 Basic system is being discontinued and only the premium will be available to purchase. PS3's lack of FSAA has had some people criticize its graphics though these reports are few as HD TV is whats normally focused on. When it comes to playing media and downloading content the PS3 fall behind in its efforts as being able to play games and download or listen to music on the Xbox360 is seamless. The PS3 normally stops playing your media upon entering a game or you originally not allowed to download information and play games in the background. One of Sony's selling points was its HD features with is Blue-Ray format but the system did not ship with HD cables needed for HD gameplay and had to be bought separately. Communication online via "cell phone style" text messaging was not well received by anyone and generally forced people to buy USB Keyboards. Through its update however they have finally installed a basic keyboard style which though slow is better known and received than its previous style. Sony has reported of even asking users to wait for the on going patches that are being released for the system which is disappointing given they had an extra year to get it right.
General Information: Both Sony and Immersion have ended there patent litigations and have agreed to "explore the inclusion of Immersion technology in PlayStation format products" creating general speculation that the rumble feature may return to Sony's future controllers. Sony originally released 2 versions of its console. PlayStation3 Basic and PlayStation3 Premium. Basic only came with a 20 gig hard drive (though upgradeable). The Premium comes with Wi-Fi built in and flash card readers which the Basic doesnt have. However Basic has been discontinued due to Sony lack of sales. Playstation3 will also be featuring something called "PlayStation Home" Which is said to give you the ability to create your own avatar (assumed to be comparable with the Wii's) and is to feel similar to the online experience of the game Second-Life.
Personal opinion: As of now the system is playing catch up and is trying hard to redeem itself since its launch. I personally feel that possibly in the future with more time the system will improve itself to the point to where is worth the money but as of right now I would NOT recommend anyone buy this system unless you have faith in Sony and its future PS3 exclusive games (which have been on the decline). Generally Xbox360 feels smoother than PS3 and with a cheaper price and simple rumble functionality I would recommend someone get a 360 before a PS3 anytime. There is a possibility however that this may change in the future thanks to PlayStation3 Trying to adhere to fans with constant upgrades in software and potential upgrade in its controller. Also as developers become more familiar with the system the more good games that will be released for the system will become available.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (As of Now)

Pros:*this was taken from my first impressions of the system* The Nintendo Wii offers a brand new intevative control with its new controller and fuctionality. Though the system is not even complete with its software upgrades (as in some of the wii "channels" arent up yet) It STILL has alot you can do with it right out of the box. Connection to the Internet with Wi-Fi was seemless and gives you access to the virtual console. This means you can download old NES,SNES,N64,SEGA, and TurboFX games. This is amazing to actually play Mario64, Sonic the Hedgehog, and The legend of Zelda all on the same system. The system also allows for pictures and even picture slideshows complete with your own music off of any SD card.*end of first impression* As of now the system has released multiple channels available some I find a great addition to the system and others I find are simply not needed. I surprisingly love its weather channel and the full version if its internet though still feels abit sluggish is still nice since its a full web browser. The Controller is comfortable and is simple yet still fun to use. It can but used for extremely simple games that nearly any person can pick up and play such as games like Wii-Sports and the older virtual console games. Or you can attach the nunchuk Attachment and play games that are very complicated yet still feel completely fun to play, such as the Legend of Zelda(Best game ive played in a LONG time!) and DragonBall Z(Which has you perform different energy moves with the Wii-mote. You pull both your arms back and push it forward to throw KameHameHa waves for example.) The gameplay makes you feel like your really in the game. Wii sales have been astounding as its already sold 6.8 million copy's bringing it well on its way to passing Xbox360 even with its 1 year head start. Its backward compatible with the gamecube is nice with ports specifically made for the gamecube controller. The drive itself can play Wii and Gamcube games with ease. The Wii offers Wii Channels for its OS for easy point and shoot style of operations.
Cons: The wii has had reports of its own technical problems though still fewer than its competition. One is its wrist strap which has been known to break through regular gameplay. Nintendo has offered to give replacements if your controller has been broken due to this. Nintendo Wii has also been reported to have its GPU overheat in its standby mode causing possible damage to the GPU itself creating distorted pixels.
Nintendo is currently being sued by 3 other companies due to patent-infringement which can mean big trouble for Nintendo in the future. Nintendo biggest possible downfall is its reliance on few hit games to keep the system going. Games that have not been created for the Wii specifically tend to lack quality in gameplay and many multi-platforming games tend to get worse reviews when ported to the Wii(not always the case however as DragonBallZ was more well received on the Wii than other systems). A few games are still coming out to keep Wii afloat but relative lack of future games becomes apparent compared to Xbox360 and PlayStation3 lineups. This has even caused people to purchase games only made specifically for the Wii-mote and has hindered sales of a number of games. There has been a recent shortage of Wii consoles available due to there high sales. Nintendo did stay true to there claim of having around 2 million units ready for launch in USA, Europe, and Japan but Nintendo did not expect the system to be such a great sales success at launch hence causing a noticeable shortage. People have been reported through continues gameplay to become physically tired and for people who dont generally like physical activity some games WILL challenge you physically shying you away from the system.
General Information: Nintendo has always stated that they are trying to target a wider demographic with its console than that of others in the seventh generation. "We're not thinking about fighting Sony, but about how many people we can get to play games. The thing we're thinking about most is not portable systems, consoles, and so-forth, but that we want to get new people playing games." This has caused some to view games on Wii as simply childish or overly simple in some cases. This however is only matter of opinion as such games as Manhunt 2, The Godfather, and Call of Duty 3 have or are going to be released for the system and are without a doubt slated for adult audiences among other games.
Personal opinion: The console is a very innovative console and its low cost and high sales generally speak for themselves. The system has had a few hits and a few miss games and this trend seems to be continuing into the next year. With future productions of Wii games specifically designed for the Wii-mote it is slated to be a strong competitor in the console wars. Generally also if you have never played games before or used to play very early consoles but have since stopped. This is the console for you(My mom and dad play it and they havent played games in years). If your getting tired of the conventional controller of consoles then this console is also for you.
*K updated and done. This post is based mainly on facts brought by many source sites and my very own personal experience (being that I own all 3 systems now)* Feel free to give your own opinion on the subject matter as you wish. Thanks for reading
