im helping my mate upgrade his PC, by trying out a few building skills i learnt.. however what i thought was simple isnt and i got stuck.

i advised him what to get the agp card and i looked at his ram

now added teh ram that works fine great..

added teh agp card which took me ages and i got into a sweat as the card didnt fit at first.. how sneeky they disguise it but really you have to slide it across which isnt really something you can determine.

anyway plugged it in the comp starts up but no screen at all.. plugged the monitor in the other (on board card) and still nothing.. took card out checked bios.. something about AGP being primary so i guess thats right..

of course as normal i would ask chan but shes not around atm so wondered if anyone else had any idea, as i know theres a few keyed in ppl here

PS sorry for writing dodgy in adding something in i cut my index finger open on the cheap case and its soar.

ooo... when i was building my pc i had a problem like that... except my problem was with the memory, something about it didn't work with the motherboard i had n such... anyways i had to get new memory for my computer to work.... maybe you'll have to do the same due to some non compatibility... if this seems like a stupid suggestion just disregard this message

things is the memory works , tried it without teh card

ah.... well it could be the other way around too.... maybe the card isn't compatible somehow...

Try installing the drivers for the card before you insert the card that might work.

I agree with flapjack, if the computer is recognising its there then it could be a driver problem or a fault on the card. So you could try installing the drivers first.

if theres no screen at all when you turn it on then installing the drivers wont do it unfortunateley as it well hasnt loaded on the vga and your not even getting into windows.

umm probably a good idea to say what the bits are specift computer specs including PSU wattage and of course the card.

one thing I would suggest is looking at the card does it have somewhere to plug a 4 pin power supply in ... like you would on your hard drive.. in fact thats where I would look first especially since its a recent AGP purchase id be betting you need that. Without it you will get a blank screen.

Um were are you? you neevr at your desk at work or something?

I wil recite from memory

its 2.2 celeron (I think)

its now 768 ram PC3200 DDR 400
Albatron MB

Ill have to get back to you on the PSU

the card is 7300GT 256Mb NVidia AGP

The 7300GT will almost definitely need an external power source in order to run, although it usually tells you that you need to connect one if you try to boot without it. If that's not the case, and it's made to run off of the AGP's standard output, there is a chance that the motherboard isn't providing enough juice for that card, since it is a relatively new one.

well you think that too, good..

mel - i think newer cards a more descrete loo at the opposite side of the slot for the 4 pin powersupply connector

AS I sais in my OP without that plugged in Im sure it would leave the screen blank.

the PSu since its not a massively old machine I would assume it has 350-400 something which in theory should suffice.

check it.. it is a common thing to miss..

If not reseat it.

 That will be it, it seems. a 4 pin molex in the back.. I was getting all frustrated with it before.. its well concealed though

seems to work now thanks

tthe driver says its not whql though

 #9199  by Chantelle

glad you sorted it

wouldnt worry about the WHQL.. alot of the NVidia drivers used to say that just proceed it should be fine.. if not get the latest one off the site.
