Ok, I need help. my computer keeps rebooting itself whenever it feels like it and its getting really annoying. I have checked the power saving feature on windows and nothing is on that can do that. Where else can I look and what else can I do. Do I have to get a new comp/parts or what?

I am running Windows Xp SP2
My comp is a Compaq D510 E-PC (we can skip the ridicule i know its bad lol)
512mg DDR ram. not sure if its standard ddr or ddr2
Intel Celeron 1.8ghz processor
Maxtor Diamonmax 40gig hard drive
everything else is on board.

Help plz!!!!

omg, i used to actually have the exact same problem, i gave up, chucked my comp in the bin, and brought a laptop... im sure that doesnt help, sorry

Could be a heat problem... when it reboots have a look at your BIOS and try to find a temp setting to see what you can find!

Also if you right click my computer.. go properties... select advanced tab

start up and recovery button

then uncheck "automatically restart"

That way if you do get a blue screen it will freeze...wright down what it says and post it here next time it happens

it may be overheating, (as Melissa says :P )try to mount your laptop up to let air in and out of your fan, and the BIOS will defiantly show the temp. Laptops arnt the best at letting air flow nicely in and out of the machine. you can mount it with a book as long as the fan is flowing freely.

this may not be the problem, but Melissa could he CPU be Heating up too hot as well? Ol' Lappehs like that heat up badly with to much memory usage. it happened with my old HP Pavilion lol. i had to buy a new one O_O. but i dont think thats it. since it happened to me i was just stating possible problems.

as for the BSOD it could be spyware, but since imma hardware man, it could very well be a hardware problem inside your lappy.

>.< im trying to help with this...its good for me, im not going to college for my CIT Degree for nothing, and lots of things has happened, and ive been able to fix some of the things.

i hoped i help, though Melissa and Chantelle should be trusted over me lol

(FYI: ive noticed that on some BIOS are different then others, some give more options while others give less, i worked in a computer shop that had a fdisk and other utilities to show more information about a computers guts, Chan, Mel in case he cant look in his BIOS do you know any software that may tell him? also, your Compaq splash screen will have a predefined key ((like F8 )) to bring you into the BIOS, it depends on the machine)

yah im waiting for it to give me that error so i can get back to mel on that. but the darn thing isn't crashing now lol. It must be afraid of mel lol.

I ran an antivirus/spyware/adware sweep and i didn't come up with anything so i don't think that is the issue. unless its one my antivirus can't detect. which is highly unlikely.

and undertaker i really appreciate your help but you're missing one little key thing.......I'm not on a laptop lol

I just gotta play the waiting game. I'm not gonna bother restarting it to find the temp if it doesn't give my anymore problems lol.

well it could be malware...i use HijackThis

http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-Hi ... 27353.html
and then when u scan...save logfile and then go to this website
http://www.hijackthis.de/
and either upload it or paste contents..it will tell you what to delete and what to keep

but also as melissa said..check your BIOS i have a compaq laptop also...same problem happened a while back..i ran hijack this and defragged and it worked

i just embrassed myself and what i stand for, why do i even try?

my IQ must be like 44, can someone delete that post, and save my sanity while i have it

Ok Mel, I hope this means something to you because to me its all jibberish LOL.

the error suggested i check my vidcard/adapter, check my bios settings. get all the updates i can. then said some technical information. The technical info says:

*** STOP 0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XEED74B82, 0XEFBC0B30, 0XEFBC082C)

*** RT2500USB.SYS - ADDRESS EED74B82 BASE AT EED6D000, DATESTAMP 425CD8E1

BEGINING DUMP OF PHYSICAL MEMORY
PHISICAL MEMORY DUMP COMPLETE
CONTACT YOUR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR OR TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR FURTHER ASSISTANCE.

I also tried to check my comps temp but bios doesn't give me that information.

Driver issue.. 0X000007E is a sound card phail... the other one.. I have no idea. I used to get that sound card driver issue a lot. When it goes into its bouts of restarting, as SOON as you get it booted. Reboot clean and go into bios and (if applicable) select "set optimized values". Otherwise, you should be in a state of fail-safe on a clean boot.

*note* press delete when you see your initial boot screen to enter bios.

*note* don't touch a damned thing if you don't know what it means in bios.

There is a slight inconsistency in the messages here which is making it hard.. what I mean is one things says graphics another says another

However the likely good news is id say initially nothing is physically broken from what you gave so far. I do not get that impression

However the message

STOP: 0x0000007E

USBHUB.SYS

Doesn’t relate to sound or graphics.. what said or mentioned graphics? Do keep an eye out for more messages which are different

It’s about usb capacity.. I assume you have usb devices installed? If so what? Could you try unplugging them see if you get the error still. (unless its mouse or Keyboard) But could you try running with just M&K but move them and re plug them in new ports.

For Starters I’d suggest 3 things;

Do what I suggest with USB use on K & M and re plug them into fresh slots if possible
Download your latest Graphics card driver… remove your existing one all together and install the new one
Install Service pack 3 for windows.

It could be a damaged .sys file.. The simple way for this is to repair the installation with your Windows Disc.. THEN ensure you replenish service packs etc..
Thing is you could spend a long time sifting through when its quicker to try fix it that way.

If it is really causing that much headache after that, honestly a clean up might be in order.. but I don’t like suggesting that if it cannot be done prior to thay

By The way who is this? Changed alias, sorry I struggle to keep up, haven’t been around for a long time.

By the way CPU temps etc try downloading speedfan 3.8 http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php that should give you a rough idea..

 #52692  by Melissa

To be honest I am sure her methods woudl result in fixing it..

But If you're not bothered I wouldn't piss about backup save files and clean it out..

Chan said it is "likely" not a hardware fault and this way you will probably find out.

 #52729  by Kioshi

Well the Graphics thing was just the top half of the message giving random things to try to fix that could be wrong, The thing is, my graphics card is so old Intel does not support it anymore. I have the latest update they made for it but that was from quite a few years ago. I want to get a new video card but this computer doesn't seem to have any pci or agp slots to put a new one in. It has room for ram, hard drive, cdrom drive and thats about it as far as upgrades go lol.

My dad says something about my usb ports might not be 2.0 compatable is there some way i can check that? or upgrade them? or do i have to get a new motherboard for that?

The fanspeed program, if im reading the right thing shows a red arrow pointing up and says HD0: 49c. is that high?

 #52730  by Laika

Yes.

Erm. It's kinda useless to use my temps as a benchmark cause I have liquid coolant. But if you must! My speedfan's readings are:

HDD 0: 21C
HDD 1: 21C
Core 0: 21C
Core 1: 21C
Core 2: 22C
Core 3: 21C
GPU (0 - 3): 22C
NB0: 20C
NB1: 21C

.. I have a lot of sensors...

 #52732  by Kioshi

Ok laika lol. How do i bring that back down. I don't wanna fry my system trying to fix that lol.

 #52734  by Laika

Welll.. You could shut it down, de-static yourself. Grab a can of air and clean it out.. Usually dust makes that heat happen. Option two would be to take off the paneling.. Not the best idea cause then the innards are exposed to the elements of.. well.. you. Third option, get a small fan and rig the paneling so the air can get in and out easier. :P

 #52754  by Melissa

Ideally we were concerned about if it says Core temp

HDD temp is on the higher side.. but nothing to worry about.. as such

USB 2 could be related.. but you shouldn't get BSOD for that reason unless you have done something you shouldn't have.

ill follow her advice first , put it this way I agree with her it initially sounds like software

You keep mentioning new parts.. if you thinking about it and have the cash do it, your system is that antique it might be worth more than your new system! :p

 #52763  by Kioshi

Ok i upgraded all the drivers and system files i could. I have also upgraded to SP 3. The keyboard and mouse work fine in all the slots when i plugged them in but for some reason my wireless internet adapter only works in the ports in the front of the computer. When i plug it into the ports on the back i keep loosing a connection.

Laika I looked in the bios and there isn't anything in there about changing settings to optimal values. From what it says i am running amibios new setup utility 3.31a. Should i look into trying to upgrade it?

Melissa wrote:You keep mentioning new parts.. if you thinking about it and have the cash do it, your system is that antique it might be worth more than your new system! :p
So.....sell it make a ton of money? lol

 #52768  by Laika

You could only sell it if you found someone to buy it. There are a few people who collect old machines like that.

AMIBIOS 3.31a is the latest bios for that system I believe. Subsiquently, I don't think that the AMIBIOS setup utility will help you in this case. All that utility will do for the most part is patern out your HDD to predict failure and.. well.. continue rebooting to solve failure. Which goes back to what Mel said;
Melissa wrote: Also if you right click my computer.. go properties... select advanced tab

I'm more than positive you still have floppy disks hanging around. You'll need some to make a BIOS update.

Go here: http://www.ami.com/support/bios.cfm

Follow the instructions as best you can. If you can, to help us further diagnose your problems, regurgitate all of the information you needed to find for that page on to this thread. :)

*Note: BIOS updates will only help your computer talk to itself better, your problem sounds like one of heat issues.

 #52776  by Melissa

I was being facetious about selling the PC.

Check the core temp on that utility again when its been in use for a while. Just in case

However if your getting that same BSOD message every time I do not think that is the issue. Not only that It is not like (without prejudice) you have a racy system that is going to generate lots of heat.. i.e celerons and intel GPUs

IN fact do you know where the event viewer is on your PC? if you go there and get your system errors (sorting colum) open one up and screen shot it, that would be handy!

 #52791  by Chantelle

There is still an inconsistency in the graphics error and the USB error.
Did you say you got a latest driver downloaded?.. .. Or even maybe consider your original one (one came with system)
Does the utility I gave not link you up to CPU or CORE temp?
Not the HDD I wouldn’t worry about that.
One question , is the BSOD ALWAYS the same message, always the USB etc?
The problem is that 0x00000007E error and 1003 errors actually cover so much but a lot of them is corrupt system file or GPU driver gone wrong. That’s the frustration with a system like this on the other side of the world.
Did you do any of the relocating USB devices and unplugging new ones. has it made a difference? Thats what MS suggest look they released an article on it.. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327863
This always a possibility that a device driver or system file is corrupt though which will mean the repair OS route..
It could be a dodgy graphics driver, it could the USB bus, it could be dodgy corrupt system files..

Here’s a question.. what Anti virus you running and what version is it!

 #52822  by Kioshi

I updated the drivers as far as i could. Intel doesn't support them anymore so even the newest drivers are pretty old.

The speed fan utility is only showing me the HDD temp. I don't know if that is because i have to change something after it installs or what. I haven't done anything to it sense i installed it. i just ran the install and then checked the temps it showed.

The BSOD is always the same message,

I am trying the different ports for the keyboard/mouse/internet as we speak. I wanted to see if the last round of things we tried worked before i did that. It didn't lol. got BSOD last night while i slept. So i will let you know if it crashes again with the new ports or not.

My antivirus is AVG Free edition v8.5

 #52830  by Melissa

Looks like it might be relating to that article then.. but if what that says doesnt work then it might be damaged files from an update or usb 2 update..

 #52833  by Melissa

coming back to this, i know its a cop out in a way and I am sure she is on the right track but if it isnt too much convinence just back up and make a clean install with SP3 .. get it all nice and crisp.. give the inside of your machine a blow out get the dust n shit out.. start fresh..

CHantelle is probably right somewhere its likeley a corrpt file or a driver which isn't happy.. sometimes diagnosing it on the other wide of world is a shit...

this way eliminates that altogether.
