so my frend has this nice big file that hes gotta get to me. its upwards of about 7GB. we tried a direct bittorrent transfer....failed. we dumped into his limewire shared folder...didnt work, only got porn (what else is new)

does anyone know of anyway for someone to privately transfer a ginormous file like this?

You can split the file so it'll fit on a couple of DVD's of which he can give to you, or post to you if he's interstate.
Heaps of free splitter applications http://www.google.com/search?q=large+file+splitter.
Its possible that his DVD burning software will automatically support multi-volumes. Or any compression programme (I recommend winRar with self-extracting checkbox ticked) will support multi-volume.

Given your friend will be sending via their internet connection which is likely to be Assymetric connection hence your fully limited to their upload distribution speed which as I say Assymetric could mean a very long time downloading 7GB

You might have a 10MBit Download speed but if he/she can only upload at 512Kbit your limited to that.

Therefore internet solution isnt ideal

As suggested best options to split, compression data and send via media..

Also hosting and downloading the data could compromise security should it be an issue.

removable storage is definateley what you need for this

edit done a rough calculation, if they had 512 upload speed which is quite reasonable and they went at 100% speed which is never likeley

the fastest you woudl get it in one hit is 32 hours

If your friend lives near you, have him bring his computer with him next time he sees you and transfer it over a lan. That would take a fraction of the time of over the internet.

it doesnt really matter how long it takes, i waited 2 weeks for a torrent of windows vista to finish, its cool, but we cant figure out how to get it to actually start transfering

You I think have to create a torrent file for it, you know like the small file you initially download breaking up the file

There are a few methods for this although not done it myself..

Although if that file is published or picked up anyone can grab it

still I think the best option is LAN, media or just copying it disc to disc

Well looks like there is a struggle on for you

incidentally long time since i used the p2p stuff but isnt there somewhere wqhere you can see what a user is sharing than a general search

alternatively cant u use something like ftp or msn to send it... but its gonna be like leave it and dont use your pc or internet for about 4 days
