I use photoshop to edit the pictures. but I use Image Ready to do the fades/anims.
Here's a Tutorial for it made by Frogger, 1 of our High Council members.

hmm ok not bad. im not a fan of the whole animation side of designs. some are good some arnt. but you will need to focus on detail.. alot of it. specially on the background. Then comes colour schemes :) its great having fun with photoshop and not bad for your first try's :)

ok, if u mean like what i slightly did with my sig, then u need to duplicate the layer that has the text and play with the opacy (<---spelling?, meh bah)

then just duplicate that layer and keep on decreasing opacy, after that u should have quite a few layers, then u just reverse theprocess so it fades back in

to save it so it animates u need to go to file>save for web and in that box choose GIF in the drop down menu and check the box titled Animate, then change the speed in which each layer changes, course this process depends on which PS u use

yeah that's the more *complicated* way - there's an easier way described in the tutorial I gave u the link for.
however, Dyvor's method is more accurate and has a better quality in the end in my opinion
