Welcome back to EcwHost.com, running on a new server, atlantis.ecwhost.com

The old server, detritus, is having all relevant data copied accross here as we speak, it will be decomissioned when done.

The log displayed on the EcwHost.com main page is quoted here. I shall update this thread with further news.

We will post a blow by blow account of what has occured when all issues are resolved, and all users are back up and running. The ecwhost forum database was pulled over first to assist in communication with our clients. It is currently the only website operable on the server until all client data is over, when we can re-import them into cpanel.

Currently it unfortunately looks like database users will have to be manually readded - meaning logging into cPanel and recreating the mysql users as appropriate. We will attempt to recover them, but it may not be possible. This does not mean your databases have been lost - all data is intact.

We apologise again for this horrifically extensive downtime, and the next installment fee for currently monthly paying customers will be waived.

Detritus.ecwhost.com is currently experiencing a hard drive issue which is not allowing it to boot. We have ordered a new server in the meantime and will begin transferring all customer data once we have access to the old server.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused by this unexpected outage.

Thank you for choosing EcwHost
Update [21:22 BST (GMT+1)]
The page you are viewing is located on our new server - atlantis.ecwhost.com
We are preparing the server for accounts, we hope to begin transferring them across as soon as possible.

Update [23:16 BST (GMT+1), 5/11/06]
We are still awaiting The Planet's (Our (old) datacentre) sales department to authorise the go-ahead for the server's drives to be mounted in a location accessable to us so we can begin transferring data. We've been waiting for a response from them for several hours now.
Update [23:30 BST (GMT+1), 5/11/06]
Here's some information on the new server:

Processor: AMD Opteron 170 [2GHz]
RAM slot 1: Generic 0.5GB DDR1 [.5GB]
RAM slot 2: Generic 0.5GB DDR1 [.5GB]
Hard drive 1: Western Digital WD Caviar RE 16 WD2500YD [250GB]
Hard drive 2: Western Digital WD Caviar RE 16 WD2500YD [250GB]
Server uplink speed: 100 Mbps
Server IP address: 208.101.52.226
Server hostname: atlantis.ecwhost.com

EcwHost's nameservers have changed IPs:
ns1.ecwhost.com is now [208.101.40.246]
ns2.ecwhost.com is now [208.101.40.245]

Update [00:43 BST (GMT+1), 6/11/06]:
It seems The Planets sales department have left for the evening. We will be unable to retrieve any data until they have processed the application tomorrow. Apologies for the further delay.
From today's date, the following month's payments for all currently paid users will be waived.
(From 6th September to 6th October 2006).

Update [08:34 BST (GMT+1), 6/11/06]:
The Planet's network is currently (for me, at least) unreachable - I am unable to login to their system to continue. We will certainly not be paying their extortionate maintenence fees.

support@ecwhost.com's email is now back online.

Update [00:31 BST (GMT+1), 7/11/06]:
We finally have access to the old server's hdds. The corrupted data on one of the drives does not affect customer data. We have all files and databases. They are being transferred accross as we speak.
Most of it's listed there. If you have any questions. Post them here and ill answer them asap.

My opinion: We should get a backup forum.

EDIT: For communication purposes. F.eks if sum1 leaves KR, he got a place to tell us if the KR forum is down.

We couldnt have had a backup forums running because the web server DIED. Once they had a way of getting it alive they transfered files, accounts etc over to a new server.

Server couldnt boot so even if we had a back up forum on there we wouldnt have been able to acsess it.

Getting disturbing. Like some hours after my first post here, the forum was down- again.

Thats because I shut it down Moto. A secruity issue came up so for the safety of this site and its users I disallowed everyones access to the site until I had resolved the situation.

Also Freewebs dont support PHP to my knowledge Stealth.

im surprised a webhosting company would use a hard drive without redudnacy so if one hard drive blows it can continue :s

RAID wasnt set up on the server, unfortunatly. The majority of the problem was the boot information being corrupted. So an alternative hdd wouldnt have made a difference. They had to start the server up under a live-distro in order to transfer files.

but you can still mirror the information and have seperate controller on it..

I meant the data store in all honestly I mean for like raid 1 for system and raid 5 for the data bases.

raid by the way is not a replacement for a backup system :)

Raid isnt actually a backup system but really it acts as one. Regardless of that - the boot information was corrupted so it wont have made a difference.

I know its not a backup and will never be a backup or ever used as backup, its fault tolerance and redundancy and in some cases performance. (performance requires more need for backup than anything as risk it higher and there is no redundancy)

well anyway its not for me to say but i still would have thought a hosting company would have used redundancy, regardless of a single server failure you can still have redundancy.

I guess. Well they obviously didnt but they do now >_>
