I know theres strong opions on home use... has anyone got any on business use

I have been tasked to investigate changing the corporate where I work.. I understand it was something Chantelle was going to do but she left the place.. The intention was to get rid of the current solution (symantec) Chantelle proposed that and the MD (who knows alot of IT stuff) agreed..

However I am to look for new ones.. but dunno where to start since home and business is going to be well alot different.. needs to protect exchange mail too and all that spam scanning.

just thought id ask if anyone had any expereince with this

Cheers

ps course I woudl have asked my sis but shes in her new job and v busy and I havent been able to get much contact on her today, tried emailing /ringing her work blackberry but nothing...i suppose another exp view is worth while anyway.

wait so ur looking for anti v? my windows runs avast home edition, which is a free program and its never given me trouble. there is a business ready one, but its not free, might be worth a dabble in.

Basically, yes it will be paid for it has to be as its licence software and rolled out centrally (how I think would be software dependant)I have a budget of £2k ($3.7?k) for 50 user licence

ill check avast out, I have it at home but not sure if its any good for business package.

I have so far looked at

sophos and kaspersky and Trend Micro..

Havent contacted them yet just looked at their sites

anyone used these?

ooo 50 users? i was thinking like 3 comps for a small business, ok nvm, ya i think avast is better for a home use, not coprorate and idont think its worth paying for. tho i dont know of much else, norton has a bad rep and macafee is sooo terrible, dont bother urself with it.

Business solutions are a totally differnt ball game,

my new place has a massive mcafee roll out, mcafee isnt my fav home one by a very long way, the anti virus for clients is adequate though, I mean its about 600 users here so its working fine

Mailmarshal is good though

look at Sophos or Kaspersky, they are worth looking into. They will prob offer a medium small business suite solution with central console management

We run mcafee at my school, it seems like a good solution. But i'd imagine with a company like mcafee that it will be quite pricey- even if you are buying 50 licences.

Mel if you cant get anyones help at work or cannot reach me easily (especially since i'm on hols now)

Maybe you should consider posting on an IT pro forum rather than a forum like this where to be fair hardly anybody is going to know what you shoudl do in your situation.. Even just to get a second opinion or a difference expereince from mine. Cannot do any harm

If you cant get no guidance at work or me try some it pro boards you'll get good advice.

You may be just confusing people here otherwise asking questions which they are jus not going to be able to answer.

Just my 2ps worth

They are all expensive for business licences, it more depends on the vendor selling you them and what deal they can swing for you rather than the kit itself..

 #21992  by Phoenix

Yes I agree with Chan on the first piece of advice. Also I know there is always vendors that will be able to swing you a good price, but mcafee won't distribute their products to other vendors unless they are comfortable with the money they make from it. I was highlighting the fact that companies like Mcafee, Norton etc tend to put the initial prices higher then other anti-virus vendors like AVG or Avast for example.

 #21994  by Chantelle

Dunno with Mcafee, The bigger companies mcafee , symantec (dont think you get Norton for business Lets face it, Norton is probabaly the worst AV out there and most IT pros wouldn't buy it as they know that) may sell direct but they have partnering companies who are resellers, so they may buy bulk licenses and sell them on.

That what my last company (where Mel is now) did with their previous Symantecs, they bought from A reseller and not from Symantec...

I have to be honest I am Not sure what id expect from AVG or Avast for a business suite :s, as I say for home its fine but for business roll out, remember you want it to protect your exchange aswell, and be able to roll it out from a single (dedicated server) which Melissa if you hadn't guessed already is MACBETH on your servers

Yea I see what you mean Chan (I won't even go into a discussion about Norton, i've been though that like 10x on this forum alone).

I've heard that Novell provide pretty decent security applications. It might be worth having a look at them. Although to my knowledge from my limited experience with their apps, its more about encrypting and protecting files then being a secruity suite that prevents intrusion. It's probably the complete wrong thing your looking for, but worth 5 minutes of your time nevertheless.

Oops, forgot to include the link: http://www.novell.com/

Um yeah Novell I think might be a differnt thing altogether, thats like using a differnt network and server solution, rather than use say Windows Servers..

You Could say liks like Linux and Windows... Supposedly quite good Novell is but not many people have the time for it and some dont feel it offers them the same level of solution as Windows enterprise.

I wouldn't worry about the thing with Norton, thing is you can only advise them Pho , if they don't listen to you thats up to them.. The problem is its a PC world thing isnt it!!

I mean if they dont trust your exp, that their prerogative..

If it ever comes up again I can vouch for you, I have no lie dealt with it at least 20+ machines.. some of which had lots of nasties on

I like to offer help without having to brandish backgrounds etc, because i am just offering my opinion from a personal and pro pov.. so if they are not going to listen to your advise about avg avast etc just as an example dont worry about it

Not that you should go to that effort , I mean why give advise for free if people argue the toss :s

Going on me hols now see every body next week

or later since im tied down at work a lot

PS Norton dont appear to do one, its symantec which isnt all that bad for business although id prefer others.

Cheers guys

yes i posted on pc pro forums, 100s of geeks like u chan 8)

all in all the general feeling was

1) Sophos is good for business anti virus

2) web marshal is very good if u wanna use that seperatley from a mail washer

3) kaspersky is v good too

4) f secure? cant remember is ok

5) avoid symantec/ norton , i dont think norton do a business one btw think its symantec, but its not v popular, and teh mail scanner slows emails down. im pretty sure no one would use norton on their business lololol

6) probably better to get established solution rather than ad hoc using a bit of this and that for a larger business.

7) Macafee wasnt that popular either although not as bad as symantec

8) a few mentioned trend micro which i seen before

Assuming im changing I hope the symantec is easy to remove off all the machines for a newbie like me.. I know its not the same as Norton which "can" be a bit of a piggy software to remove but hope it wasnt going to cause problems removing if i got to do 40 users and 10 servvers or so....

so if u ever have to do that.. theres ur asnwer

cheers guys u can close this now ill pursue a few avenues :)

sorry been away all weekend, well tbh it was a case of sureving across boards and labs plus opions? I can try searching for some more if you wish? pcpro definateley had a few topics very similar to mine somewhere,

the posts I made was on a private forum so you wont be able to access it so i can only provide quotations, most of the searches are from registrations too.. but there was several searches i done, since it was work i decided to make a detailed investigation

if you really want it ill try dig the stuff out

or I could post my report which I have put together for my boss

 #22234  by Phoenix

Nevermind then, I was just curious to hear some opinions. Good luck with the report :)

well yes the actualy forum posts are going to be not easay

(shame really since they are real life experiences)

but heres links from pc pro REVIEWS (which are sort of helpful) if you want

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/pcpro/reviews/10 ... ion-2.html

Sophos is one we are looking at

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/122268/k ... =kaspersky

Kaspersky too

Couldnt find a review on symantec but there were laods fo reviews on norton (which is similar i am guessing??) although as before stated its not for business use anyway. The reviews are not as bad as teh forum posts
