I know some of you might be considering, or already have upgraded to Vista, and want to play Jedi Academy -- it is possible. A lot of people have been complaining about the incompatibility of the two, but it works just fine. All you have to do is browse to the Jedi Academy folder and in the base subdirectory, find the "jamp.exe" (Jedi Multiplayer executable), right-click on it, go to permissions, and set it to run as an administrator. Vista has a whacky security system to help people avoid causing more harm than good to their PC. Also, make sure you have the latest drivers for your VGU, as games that ran on the Q3 engine were notorious for having openGL problems when Vista first came out. It has henceforth been rectified, for the most part.

DX10 is pretty muc the same as DX9, just made to run with Vista. Trust me, there's no need to downgrade anything on Vista to run games. I've run JKA, RO, Flyff (for the most part) and countless other games flawlessly on Vista. The only thing you have to do sometimes is set the game to run as Admin...other then that...Vista (buisness edition excepted) runs fine, and runs everything fine. It's just secure...really..really overly secure.

Edit: Most games will not run good if you have Vista Buisiness, to check, ther's a thing somewhere in the control panel of Vista that says something like "Check your PC's Rating" If you rating is 3.0 or over, you have Vista Ultimate and can run anything you want pretty much...anything below a 3.0 is the Buisiness edition and your kinda screwed...unless you can find a way to run the more demanding games nowadays.

I have Business and haven't noticed anything that hasn't been able to run properly.

Wow You'll see!!

DX10 is so much more better than DX9..

You just dont have either the games or the card to do so yet... DX10 has hardly got started..

Make sure with JA you as previous stated get teh latest drivers since it was originally decided OPENGL was dropped later on its been put in..

I think SP1 might change the permissions settings somewhat..

From a business point of view I like the security option to be there should I want it... makes Administrators life a bit easier.

Well, right now my graphics card isn't exactly the best...however, I've seen some screens of the DX9-DX10 differances, and while there's not much...DX10 does indeed do some things very nicely. So far the highest demanding game i've run on it is Oblivion...which even toned down to what used to be considered crap settings...it still looked damn good.

DX 9

that is an example of what the differences are going to be,

Its quite likeley that your card wont be able to do DX10...

Id like to be able to see DX10 thouh in its full power ran in front of me... I think it will take another year or so before we get to see the real effect.

You can disable the permission settings on Vista..

Id still follow ^^ her advise and wait for SP1.. me

Although I wonder if its worth skipping Vista and getting Vienna in 1.5 years

Vienna? theyre already announcing new operating systems? wut the hell is wrong with microsoft....slow down dammit. id say they need to start working on fixing vistas flaws for SP1 and 2, along with maybe making it a bit more compatible with older hardware, cuz not everyones got a decent computer to run vista right now anyway; for them to start working on another OS seems to be saying "oo, we kinda made some mistakes with vista, lets launch a new browser in a few years to make up for it."

 #19718  by Chantelle

I think Vienna is going down the route of what apple do..

rather than havong a new OS every 5 years you have one which they release a massive update every 2 years,,

Yes alot of people will see this as MS ripping ppl off which I suppose is a fair comment... Despite teh fact apple do it, but to their disciples Apple are gods and they do not wrong ;)

well i looked into it a bit and apprently this project started before the release of XP, as an idea to complete revolutionize computing. that sounds kinda drastic, but maybe microsoft can pull it off. jesus, all of this is making my puny computer seem even smaller :P

Well veinna is a long way away..

I am holding of my home computer going primarily vista yet
