So I just came back from watching Solo, and I gotta say it wasn't as bad as I had expected (although I wouldn't say it was spectacular either).

I did like how it revealed a lot about Han's background (such as his last name's origin, his early years in Corellia, his aspiration as a pilot, and how he won the bet against Lando, etc.) and there were some good tie-ins with the rebellion (and how Aurra Sing died!). I also liked how they decided to change several "usual" elements: The opening crawl was just few "slides" of background, Han said he has a good feeling about the Kessel Run, and there was no lightsaber action at all (the only time a lightsaber was shown was during that very brief Darth Maul scene).

On the other hand, I'm still wondering whether this whole movie was necessary. To me, Rogue One was much more entertaining and relevant. But this was supposed to be a standalone film anyways, and I'm good with that. All in all, it was entertaining, but not too exciting. I do plan to go watch it again as I'm sure there were many things that I've missed (let me guess - someone famous was in as a cameo and I completely missed it).

What are your thoughts?

HAN SHOT FIRST
WE KNOW HAN'S LAST NAME
WE KNOW WHY CHEWBACCA WAS CALLED CHEWIE
HAN MADE THE KESSEL RUN IN 14 PARSECS
WE KNOW HOW HAN GOT HIS BLASTER
DARTH MAUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

other than this movie's obsessive need to explain everything ever, was a pretty fun ride. at least it had characters as opposed to that depressing graveyard rogue one. I think comparisons to rogue one is pretty inevitable, that being said. Music might have been better in rogue one as well

characters spot on,actors ( casting as well ) spot on, action direction was spot on, cinematography was spot on, CGI and practical effects were spot on ( really cool that they're preferring practical over CGI so far in the new saga ), and the film had real heart and spunk to it. I think i prefer the energy level of TFA and Solo over the other two so far.

still wish they'd stop with the distracting and awkward references. We don't need an explanation or a spotlight on everything we know about star wars.

i would agree rogue one was more relevant, however solo was better executed. if someone told me they'd be making a story about the death star plans, or han solo's background, i'd be more inclined to anticipate the death star plans movie.

Darth Maul, I kind of predicted he would show up because of all the gangs and syndicates. Overall, the movie itself, ehhhh, it was ok. Doesn't top Rogue One in my book.

I really enjoyed it, the opening "crawl" was actually my least favorite part of the movie, I thought they should have either committed to it or left it out, but it makes sense not to have a full one since Rogue One didn't. The movie itself was pretty much everything I could have hoped for, a really fun romp with some characters we all know and love with plenty of OT callbacks sprinkled in, but also with it's share of dark, tense moments. Dunno if it was quite as good as Rogue One, but not far behind. And well ahead of 7 and 8 imo
