I realized today after watching the last jedi again, that all of the new star wars, rogue one, episode 7 and 8 all have something in common. The movie has a bunch of species of aliens that are basically all new. Nowhere in these three movies did i see really any species from the previous movies except recurring characters. twileks for example. we see at least one in majority of the movies. Remember the first cantina scene? more aliens than humans, now the movies are more humans than aliens. I have a theory that most of the species are all slaves to the first order so that's why they're not seen or maybe they just got so busy adding all the new species that they forgot to put some old ones in there. I don't know. I just had to get this out to someone lol. I specialize in crazy theories and point out the most useless stuff so this may be all crazy talk but i would like to see some original aliens darnit. Thoughts? Theories? I'll be here all week

Yeah I really miss the diversity of species from the prequels. There were so many colourful and wacky aliens, which helped create that universe. I feel like the newer movies have lost a lot of that intrigue and rich culture that the star wars universe has. Also, Porgs do not count.

You'll also notice that all the male characters are portrayed as weak or complete idiots.

I was talking to a friend the other day, and I said it would be cool if they were introduce main characters of familiar species. Imagine a band of main characters being a Weequay, a Twi'lek, an Ugnaught, etc.
How strange and very Star Wars would that be? Not to mention we would see some connection to the actual franchise.

What I really hate is how they are trying to destroy the past to make room for the future. Rian Johnson, the director of the Last Jedi, pretty much said, "What would Star Wars be without all the familiar images and icons?" Pretty much without Luke, without the Skywalkers, without everything from the old. So their method of making room for the new is make the past characters look bad, and then kill them off, hopefully drawing the attention to the new characters. Luke is now a depressed, sad nihilist, Han is a dead-beat dad who abandoned his wife and son, Leia lost political power and is a simple leader of a small portion of the New Republic, etc.

They hope we will like their characters more because they make the old ones seem worse. This is not how storytelling should be. Make the new characters interesting, and don't write them off as one dimensional abominations. As John said, all the males are treated like cowards (Finn) or like tough dumb guys (Poe), or depressed losers (Han, Luke), while all the females are in high command, powerful physically and politically as they show flawless characteristics, which makes them all boring and not worth getting invested in.

i think you're all missing the point? Silent was pointing out that in the established lore of the new trilogy, it doesn't reference aliens it created in sequels or indeed the original and prequel trilogy. For instance, Force Awakens introduced the Crolute species, Last Jedi introduced Wermals, Rogue One introduced the unnamed midget ailen in the third act. The consistences of created species' presence isn't strong, and to that, I agree.

If you guys are arguing ailen variety, well

This of course, addresses strictly the onscreen aliens, and not those seen in novels.

From a certain point of view, strong male characters might as well be aliens from the original movies. :P

The twileks were loyal to the republic so you would at least think you would see some of them in the resistance or in rogue one. Hopefully in Rian's new trilogy he'll bring old aliens back instead of adding more. All new planets is a thing i realized as well, granted it's a big galaxy and a lot of systems, but Jakku is essentially Tatooine with a different name.

This is exactly what i mean. All new aliens. granted the first cantina scene we didn't know who the eff they were either but now that we know the species they go and throw a few dozen more into the mix and don't add any originals. Its like the new ones are in a whole different universe. if it weren't for recurring extra aliens there would be no original alien species.

I highly doubt we will see anything familiar in Rian's new trilogy. He specifically said he wants to remove everything iconic from Star Wars, and see if he could make a story out of that, not to mention Rian isn't a Star Wars fan per say, he probably doesn't even know what a Twi'lek is.
