so having finally trashed my old clamshell along comes the new line of stubborn ibooks

so my grandparents are setting up a internet and a wireless network in their house (u should see it, 2 60 year old italians fighting over wires, its like a fish outa water trust me....) so my grandmother just retired from her teaching career, where she was given a white ibook (which is how i got the old clamshell, this new one replaced it). verizon, their new provider will not run for old os x 10.2, which is on this one, so she left it with me to upgrade it.

i have discs for 10.3.5 (which as much as we know, is supported by verizon) and 10.4 (which would be much better to have, but prolly wont work), but 10.3 will not install for some reason. on the apple website it says that it is compatable with all ibooks*, so why not this one? if anyone has any info, it would be greatly appreciated (or if anyone has any .mkp's for 10.3.1, that would be great too)

i have tried something called XpostFacto, which is a program made to break apples restraint on installing 10.3 on older laptops (which shouldnt be needed anyway cuz it syays on their website this laptop will work with 10.3) but all it did was freeze the laptop and i had to dump memory to get it to boot again

ummmmmm...i talked to my dad(the new pro at macs, he knows everything bout em now) and he ses theres no way ull be able to run OSX at all...he ses ull only be able to run OS9

I would leave it, if its working okay I would leave it rather than Hack it since apples Intergration is so tight.

But personally i am not a big fan of Macs. I am not saying theay re not good at what they do, but thats just it I feel there is alot I cannot do or it doesnt do as well, anyway ..

I actually would have thought 10.3 (is that Tiger?) should have worked with your iBook. butif its only going to cause problems I would stick.

im right with u, id much rather have a nice PC i could put DOS commands into, i find it a much easier environment to run in.

but its my gandmothers, and she needs to be able to get wireless and dsl on this laptop. the funny thing is, my computer graphics teacher has the same laptop, running 10.3.6 (which is panther btw). he sed he might have some install CDs for 10.3.1, which i think will install, then i can just run from there. if not, i can remove mac os x, and install panther clean from OS 9.

w.e, ill mess around with it later, ill have plenty of time with it.

and i dont think its macs u dont like, i think u guys just dont like OSX, ud rather have XP, which is what i perfer aswell. and iwth my new macbook intel core duo, i can put XP on it, which is exactly what im planing on doing very soon.

no, i believe it is verizon dsl connected to an apple airport extreme, which is why the laptop wont connect to it, it doesnt support airport extreme. 10.3 does, which is why im trying to upgrade. its been a pain in the ass becuz wenever it needs updates i have to unplug the internet out of the computer and into the laptop....

well I prefer to make my own builds , although the mac hardware is very good for what it is.... rubbish for games though

Yea but everyone uses Mac's for business's because they tend to be more reliable then windows. Also the secruity side of it all- as Mac constantly boast about in all their adverts.

Are you serious Macs have a serious less use in business than Windows.

The windows network structure has unparralleled competition in that sector I thought.

Macs do seem to be very good at certain professions though like desiging and graphics and effects and video.

And they have security on its side though.

I think they are just tools , some things are better at some things others are better than others..

i dont perfer 1 or the other, i like both eaqually.

i use OSX bc im artsy/a musician, and i dont see windows very artsy . i use macs for my enjoyment and bussiness, but mostly recording music/other stufff.

and i decided im getting XP pro, and puting it on today bc i can with my new laptop(thank god for the core duo processors!)and soon i will have the best of both worlds. i missed windows bc it has everything that macs nowadays, are lacking. i think ill be using them both about eaqually the same amount of time.

everyone has a perferal between macs and windows...and around here i see its mostly windows, but round my school allot of kids perfer macs, bc there easiar to use and have cool programs(you cant beet iLife).but i like both, as ive sed, bc the both have eachothers opposites.soon i will have both on 1 laptop(god bless intel!)

Coporate business and medium small business are very much dominant Windows server and Active directory setup., the architecture and struture and toolsets are very wideley spread used, you can have all types of client end machines so having mac end user client section is not a problem.

The server ranges are also very scalable depending on what solution you want.. the windows main server system directory Active Directory links into many several and all types of integrated solutions like exchange and such.

Everything has its advantages and disadvantages as the desktop stations... it does depend on what you want to use things for..

windows is used more cuz its much more versitile in my opinion. and, speaking of macs laptops, they are annoying, they are built to not be taken a apart and not be broken. so if something happens to DO break (IE: the screen in my new laptop has to be fully extended to get a picture) then u have a problem and have to pay $500 for (which is why my laptop still has this problem )

I dont really understand why you would want a Mac computer then to put XP on it. Sureley part of the Mac expereince is teh fact its OS x.

Otherwise you might aswell use a normal PC.. be far cheaper.. and you have a better chance of getting a system built for what you need. i.e mac hardware you might get well they are talking quad core now, yet if you were a gamer say Mac you get rubbish graphics hardware and not as much ram.

Apple are a hardware company...
This is one of teh main reasons why OS X is more stable than XP globally (when I say that you can have it the other way around but in general).

The reason being that OS X is not designed to cater for all the multiple hardware combinations its designed to run on the set closed box it has.

well, mac for media, like recording music and listening to it, and its got a great organization system for everything. i use iCal allot, and iPhoto and allot of other fun things. then u have widgets which give u the time, date weather, and everything you can think of (im not exagerating, just go to apple.com and find widgets, there are easilly more than 300). i have widgets the tell me all the specs of my computer, such as my bettery life, how long itl last for w.o being pluged in, the battery health, the speed of the fans, the heat of the machine, the memory and lots more. and the great thing about widgets is, you can get all of them, and the dont take up mush room, also, all u have to do to see them is press F12 and then the screen sets back and a new screen comes up and put u in ur in ur own like "widgets library" so there not taking any space on your desktop(like vistas stupid bad sorry exuse for a copy of widgets, called gadgets do)

and i use windows for...everything that OS X can't . like allot of programs and things like tabit and JAMs KT, or even freaking JA+

You can actually download Widgets for XP, if you want. I have, or have had, almost all of what you named on my computer at one time. (You have good taste ). Most of OS X's convenient software has been recreated on Window's based operating systems by third party companies. You just have to look around. I don't really like running two seperate operating systems on my computer, personally, but I guess if that's how you want to do it, there's no problem really.

yeah its gadgets now on windows isnt it, very much more integrated into Vista but still on XP.. and you can surpress them liek you say you do with the F12..


THngs is you say u use a Mac for playing games on XP...

Macs hardware is bad for games.. not OS X but they do not ship gaming graphics cards... Apple also rip you off badly if you want to upgrade to one aswell..

By the way... JA is actually one of the games you can get for the Mac lol

i know mel, i have it for mac, but my discs are destroyed x300 and u cant get JA+ for macs, nor can u get JAMs KT, and my windows discs are fine from my old PC

If I were to get a Mac for myself.. (I dont need one but)

Id get a Mac Pro , or a Mac mini depending on the situation.

Problem is Mac Pro is very redundant on power and speed. But processing and buliding wise its good kit.. It woudl be very good for alot of home things like basic use, pcture and video editing and perhaps music creation..

Mac Minis are smart things I do like em alot, kinda in contrast a little light on power, but for light use... great!!


iMac - good idea, but I think they look awful. Mid Range I guess but if you want to add that bit of oumpf it gets pricey.

I personally wouldnt bother at all with thier laptops.


To be honest I would pretty much end up Dual booting with bootcamp though as you say OS X i find soemthings I either cannot do or just a pain to find an alternative.

there is alot of personaly preference though, I prefer to build my own systems or have a system where I can pick and choose the exact hardware I want so i get what I want and not have redundancy or compliations which I do not want to pay for etc.
