i just got mozillas email client thunderbird. theres an extension for it called webmail that allows it to act as a client for an online email account like hotmail. in the initial startup of the program i put in the incoming and outgoing servers as hotmail.com. i then leanred that i was supposed to set these to "localhost" and the extension would take care of the rest. problem is, i can change the incoming server to localhost, but the outgoing one will only stay at hotmail.com, which is the wrong one and i cant figure out how to change it.

anyone have any ideas? my first thought was that if i clear the registry of the programs history and uninstall it, it would ask me that initial setup again, but that didnt work. anyone who uses it with a web mail server i would really like the help

thx

Im pretty sure that hotmail doesn't support POP3 or IMAP, so I don't think its possible, even with this 'extension'.

Hotmail only works with Outlook and Outlook Express, because of some sort of agreement between the two. Thunderbird won't support hotmail correctly.

If Hotmail has automatic forwarding, you can have it send every message you get to a Gmail, or other account, and use Thunderbird via that email provider. Not sure how tyrannical Hotmail has gotten as of late.

grimm as I say the tool should allow hotmail to work. You will just need to dig around for the settings

when choosing a messaging protocol try to be aware of the differences between imap4 and pop3.

pop3 merely downloads all e-mails to your local machine and deletes them off the remote server. IMAP 4 opens or downloads your mail box temporatily.. Pop3 seems alot quicker in that sense, but it depends, if your only accessing your mail box from one machine then do pop3 if not imap4 migt be better.
