Yet another virus..

Hey guys,
As the thread title suggests yet another virus is spreading its way around msn. Once it finds its way to a KR members msn, its not long before we all start to pick it up.
The latest virus is:
http://www.symantec.com/security_respon ... 99&tabid=2
Kenshin and Zabuza are confirmed to have it.
This virus spreads by contacting you on msn and asking you to accept a file transfer of some pictures. Whatever you do guys please don't accept it. This virus is however a low threat so there is no great cause for concern.
Now i'm on the subject I think its wise that everyone should have a decent and up to date antivirus because if any of you had, there wouldn't be this problem- i'm not naming names but this needs to be sorted out. If you don't have an anti-virus download the free one AVG its supposedly one of the best out there and best of all its free and will give you a decent amount of protection.

Zab mate, i'm not blaming anyone. I was mearly letting people know who has it so they know to be cautious until you get rid of it.
Ken didn't know he sent it to you, so its unfair to blame him either. These viruses are designed with the sole purpose of mis-leading you and getting onto your computers the people you should blame if anyone is the people that create these bloody things.

Yeah id vouch for avast too.
AVG Was good however recent tests have proven it is actually slipped far behind detecting virii.
But even having anti virus, the best protection vigilance..
Msn virii are usually the same, always trying to send you a picture which is
mypic.jpg.exe
Look out for the exe

Well Avast or AVG just as long as you have something. Its better then nothing.
Anyone who voted that they didn't know what an anti-virus was, get your ass on the websites descibed and get yourself one. Its one of the basics for online browsing. If you don't care what happens to your computer then by all means continue without having one.

Yeah as well as that avast and avg seem to work without you notcing too much.. they are light
Norton and the like they aim to half your processor speed, increase load up times... and generally make your Ram feel like your on a 386

Well I use Norton and have done since before I can remember. I have 2GB of ram, so it doesn't effect my system performance in the slightest. I switched to AVG once when my Norton subscription ran out, thought i'd just try it- to be honest I didn't notice any difference in system performance, I was just used to Norton so I decided to go back to it.
Although saying that i've heard Norton 360 is very good with system performance and is apparently the biggest improvement since the Internet Security range. Its also very user-friendly for the novice user- it is aimed that way though

I get alot of this at college..
I dont hate macs I use them half teh time at college...
But i can understand why people do.. not becuase of the machine but because their user base has a chip on its shoulder and likes to slate anyone that uses something thats not white and pretentious..
It does my head in.. Yes its a computer and it has many advantages over using a PC with windows but it works both ways... I dont care so why shoudl they..
Anyway we done a project and it was based on protection suites
I think if I reecall AVG sell their detection to Symantec.
But Avg detection along with Norton who i think are part of Symantec have a bad detection database..
Although it depends on what you use for home or business...
I think Kaspersky might have been top avast was about 3rd or 4th, although i use it.
If you want ill ty find the article

I didn't create this topic to find out how good/bad each Anti-virus was, I just wanted to make sure that people have an anti-virus, because this is the second time in about a month where viruses have been floating around KR members msn's. I got this particular one sent to me by 3 different people, all being KR members.
I also wanted to raise awareness of how important and anti-virus is when your online. Without one you leave yourself vunrable to the thousands of viruses out there. Although as some people may say they don't need one, they just play it safe meaning they watch what they accept / download / what websites they visit etc- but we all know even the most vigilant internet users can be mis-lead into contracting viruses.
As for Norton, in my opinion if you know how to use it and you have the required computer specifications then it will serve you just as well as any other anti-virus. Half the tests conducted regarding how good an anti-virus is are mis-leading one way or another. The majority of the time because the anti-virus companies pay the people carrying out the surveys to put their product out on top. Also its not unheard of, that anti-virus companys even pay programmers to create viruses so they can boast that their product protects the user against the said virus. Its all a mixed up world. Personally the way I look at it, if you have got something that works, then don't worry about it. Norton has kept me free from viruses for the past 7 years and I have no intention of changing it although I am not naive enough to not admit that there are indeed better products out there.

I was just trying to offer some advise to picking one.. for your average pc youd better off getting a light one..
Of course the MSN virus is likeley to beat any antivirus since you have authorised its executable.
" if you have got something that works, then don't worry about "
I agree, its first rule principle.
"As for Norton, in my opinion if you know how to use it and you have the required computer specifications then it will serve you just as well as any other anti-virus"
I think you'd be better off with a firewall and none than it.
I am not trying to play devils advocate here I just dont think that is remoteley true. Its crippling and bad coded product aside Norton has bad detection rates..
Bottom line:
I was just saying if people wanted to get some anti virus they should be looking at a certain few which are very effective and work very well.. and avoid others.
Of course the MSN virus is likeley to beat any antivirus since you ahve authorised its executable.

Sorry Mel, I didn't mean my post to come across as offensive in anyway and now that I read it I can see how it can be mis-interpreted.
I think that the fact that everywhere I go, people jump on Norton saying about how bad it is, and how it doesn't work as well as others when 90% of the time they have no solid evidence to back it up. The only thing most people can prove is that Norton uses more system resources then its competitors. Also didn't advise anyone on getting Norton anywhere in this thread, I only mentioned AVG as its the first one that came to my head, and that i've had experience with.
As for Norton having one of the worst detection rates, when I was searching for information on this particular virus so I could help people remove it. The only two anti-virus companies that mentioned anything about it, or its charactistics where Sophos and Symantec. I looked on many other anti-virus vendor sites to find more information then Symantec had provided with no success. Also Norton intergrates itself with MSN, at least it does for me. I have before accepted a file transfer containing a virus and Norton got rid of it before it even appeared on my desktop.

All of the responses that are programmed into the virus are listed on the following page:

I included that link in the first post
