i am currently downloading 1.8 is that ok?

1.8 Should be fine. Remember while playing to keep the launcher opened, otherwise the game will shut down.

also i have a problem with the servers not showing up in the server browser now that it is downloaded

Did you do the usual tweaking? ( i.e changing connection from Lan to Internet )
I should also point out that Moviebattles is a very flimsy project. It's not entirely stable. I can give you a IP to connect to, on one of the most popular servers if you like.
