So some of you may have heard about this on the news (yes, it made actual TV news) - The Bloodbath of B-R5RB was a historical event that took place in Eve Online on the 27th-28th of January (2 days ago from today). Eve is an MMO which is taken very seriously by its players. Basically it's a giant space game with a realistic economy system and complex playfield.

The reason I say it's historical is because ... it IS. Over $300,000 worth of ships and in-game resources were devastated in the battle. Well over 12,000 players took part (including witnesses), making it the largest known video game conflict ever seen.

So what happened exactly? Well, similar to the Halloween War (another epic battle that took place), one person forgot to pay rent. The sector was a pivotal point preventing warp-gate transformations between two sets of solar systems. Paying rent prevented un-allied corporations from accessing the warp-gates. So when Concord (the local police) came to pick up the payment and it wasn't there - this basically opened up the sector for grabs by another faction of dominantly Russian players. When these corporations saw the window of opportunity, they took it.

  · 717 unique player Corporations
  · 55 unique player Alliances

Another Eve record that was broke which is probably one of the most staggering - 75 Titan Class ships were lost. Now when I say Titan, I mean ... 6+ months of skill training, at least $7000 worth of game resources each.This has never been seen before.

I have played Eve, and I think it's a great game. Probably still my favorite MMO. I would not recommend it to anyone though unless you are willing to grind your forehead against a cheese grater trying to fit the learning curve. As the saying goes, Eve is not a game - it's a job. It costs $15 a month - one PLEX (Pilot License) is that sum. So the in-game currency can be used to buy PLEX, which is how we can get a real figure for the total amount of destruction. I really wish I could have seen this happen or participated.

Wow over 300k? damn last i saw it was at 200k. I gotta say, i once wanted to play EVE, not anymore, but i do enjoy the stories. Anywho *salutes* To the people who spent their time (and money) on this battle. People be cray

Thats a lot of space ships. Itd b cooler imo if the game had a freelancer setup.... but i guess that wouldnt work very well w that big of a ship

Ah, yes everything is pretty automated (but not everything). This game uses a more realistic style of space combat - that being sit there and throw all you can at the enemy, hoping you can take it and he can't. Star Wars is based around WW2 dog fighting.

I think there is a manual flight override, but I'm not sure. I've never used it. Some of the smaller ships can go fast enough to escape laser-beams and missiles at certain distances. I ran a tank set up, using a ship called the Drake (if you look at that chart, the second ship listed, the Raven, is twice as big as the Drake). This means I just sat there and threw tons of long-range missiles at enemies. Most of the time I'd be outside of laser-range (ships were too far away to accurately hit me), and enemy missiles would run out of fuel and miss.

It's all space-based. There is a game however that runs side-by-side which is an FPS. It's called Dust 514, only on PS3/PS4 though :\ I don't know if they'll ever port to PC or what. Probably not, but there are a lot of rumors like always...

Eve is a really fun game once you get into it, but some may find it boring... I suggest looking up some gameplay videos first, then getting the free trial month they offer. It can be very confusing in the beginning, and will probably remain that way for a while. The gameplay videos will not convey to you how awesome it is, you'd have to experience it for yourself.

I'm picking it back up this summer, maybe earlier. I think MM told me he was doing the same. It's a lot of fun if you work for a corporation, but be prepared to get frustrated. Most corps that'll hire starter players for PvP are looking for cannon fodder... they will put you on the front line for sector defense or pirate ("rat") defense, and you WILL lose.

I like centering myself really really far away from major player populations and running security missions for local sector corporations. As I said before, I tank missions by myself, I got tired of the corp drama. Oh the adventures I've had... filled with heartbreak and joy... some of you remember when I lost my first Drake, the Satisfaction, because I made a big deal about it on Skype...

Anyways, tell me before you get it if you do - there's a lot of mistakes people make when they first start. Seriously, decision making in this game is crucial.

This seems very exciting for people invested in the game, but I could never dedicate that kind of time and effort in a virtual job where everything could be lost.

You can get insurance so when you do lose a ship that's under contract, you'll get money for it. The difference is the amount of money may not equate to the combined cost of equipment and a whole other ship. I was very lucky and able to barely scrape by when I bought my next Drake.

Sometimes player corporations will buy ships for you to use, especially the ones that are literally sending you to your death. They just need people to represent for them and look menacing in great numbers.

EVE Online is only $4.99 for four more hours. This does not include a subscription tho.
