lets say one metter for a normal person is one normal step

so 2 persons would take 1 step for the smaller person he will take his smaller meters for the biger he takes his normal sized meters and lets say 1 meter of the biger person is 2 meters for the smaler person so the would walk 1 mile in normal length the litle person would walk as twice as the biger he makes more steps

length doesnt work like that. It has a static value. 1 meter is 100cm. It never has a different value, that is all it ever is/was/shall be.

in a 100m race, at the olympics.

frank is 184m tall
bill is 164m tall

how much further does frank have to run then bill?

But yes, jawfin had the right idea, and dent got it first and seemed to reason it out without any fancy-schmancy tables and whatnot so congrats dent!

Next puzzle! This one seems easy (and is actually) but a lot of people make mistakes when solving it!


There was a young gal who had a few bad accidents. So her grandmother decided to give her an unusual gift: a large sum of money with which she was to buy a brand-new safe car, like a Volvo.

There was one condition, however. When she got the car, Grandma wanted to see it to make sure that she didn't take the money and go out and buy a Firebird.

So on the first available Saturday she decides to drive to Grandma's house, which is 120 miles away. Because she's not particularly eager to get there, she gets on the highway and sets the cruise control for 40 miles an hour.

She drives 120 miles to Grandma's house. Her new car has a little computer that tells her that her average speed is 40 miles an hour.

When she gets there, she shows Grandma the car and high tails it out of there; she's eager to get home because she wants to go to the tattoo parlor before it closes. She sets the cruise control for 60 miles an hour.

She travels the same road and the same 120 miles. When she gets home, she does a little figuring. She says, "I drove 120 miles up, 120 miles back, or 240 miles. I drove 40 miles an hour up, and 60 miles an hour back, so my average speed was 50 miles an hour, and it should have taken me 4.8 hours. But it took me 5 hours!" This 5 hours calculated means on the road. Time spent at Grandmas house is not included in the final time.

The question is how can that be?

Her average speed was not 50 because she spent 3 hours going 40, and only 2 hours going 60. 120/40 = 3 hours + 120/60 = 2 hours = 5 hours total.

Her actual average speed was 240/5 = 48

PS - What kind of grandma is that mistrustful of her grand daughter? Wouldn't a picture have been ok instead of wasting all that time?

the shorter person would definitely have to work harder, do more steps, and do them more quickly than a tall person but that doesn't mean the distance they are walking is any farther. (i used a human because a dog would already take more steps naturally since they have 4 legs) The short person may need more steps, but since their steps don't take them as far it all adds up to the same distance.

This young gal didn't calculate the average speed; she calculated the average of the speeds.
In fact, her average speed is not 50 miles an hour but 48 miles an hour. And you arrive at that by calculating the total distance divided by the total time. The total distance being 240 miles, and the total time being 5 hours.
So 240 divided by 5...

Which comes out to be 48 miles an hour.

Another puzzle, this one's tougher. It took me a while to get it >.>



Go out and get yourself 16 matchsticks. You're going to use the matchsticks to make the following Roman numeral sequence. One, then two matchsticks to make a plus sign. Plus Roman numeral two. Plus Roman numeral three. Plus Roman numeral four, which is not "IV," but, in this case, "IIII." It would look like this: I + II + III + IIII.

If you add this up, one plus two plus three plus four, it adds up to 10.

The question is, can you move one matchstick, without removing it, still using them all -- and make that equal to four?
