Windows XP firewall doesn't not protect 443, neither do several hardware modems/routers.
If its closed that's tollerable, but still not recommended.
Its the common port for secure html, eg. your bank, paypal, ebay would use it. Whenever the domain is something like https://www.... the s after the http indicates the secure link. Its all very complex at the low level, RSA security etc.
Best bet is read what Steve says about it at http://www.grc.com/port_443.htm
I know your being informative , but I was aware of https lol

I dunno I imagine its right if the external leaf of the dmz is allowing secure connections then thats okay right,,

otherwise how do they connect? (genuine question i dunno)

Onto grimms prob

I think we been through this, why dont you use one build.. several builds scattered on one disc cannot be good anyway, not like you cant see each others docs anyway

Chantelle wrote:You seem to have the most insane setup.,.

Why dont you all use the same OS and just have your own profiles? you can protect and secure your own files privateley etc.
cuz even tho its harder in my setup, i prefer it alot more because i do a lot of trialing software for best use. in the past month ive downloaded 6 different internet browsers, 2 audio editing prgram, a massive video editing program etc. all that crap on one comp would slow down everyones profiles. id rther have mine slowed down, cuz then i can also edit my own registry tree, delete stuff i know i can delete, etc. its much much easier.

btw it is svchost that is going radical at startup. its using anywhere from 50-100% of the processor in the first 2 minutes after login. what can i do to help solve this, is it ok to just terminate the process?

Chantelle wrote:Unfortunateley a new HDD might not be an option, as he said his sister is using the same pc on another partition. Also isnt his hard drive new?

I suspect its application, security or profile.

His last post to me seems alarming of application stick

This I have found in his situation would be likeley MacAfee update or even windows update sticking

My initial advice would be look at the processes and recources during this period and see what is sticking

if its something like svchost etc go to command prompt and

tasklist /svc you can see the processes relating to it there.

Of course a fromat is a noption but would be good to try solve the problem first.
I think she already answered your question

and your last post answered your own

You cannot kill svchost, it runs all your services.
Get a decent bootup process tracker that shows how long each programme (and service) take to load, and what resources they use.
And get a virtual machine (I use VMWare) to trial software that you're not sure of. You could use mojopac running off the hard-drive as a psuedo virtual machine (if there's such a thing).
Again, just try disabling the DCOM service to see if it boots quicker. If you find somethings just don't seem to work OK then re-enable it. Get a registry cleaner that kills old DCOM objects.

AudioSrv, BITS, Browser, CryptSvc, Dhcp,
dmserver, ERSvc, EventSystem, helpsvc,
lanmanserver, lanmanworkstation, Netman,
Nla, RasAuto, RasMan, SENS, SharedAccess,
ShellHWDetection, srservice, TapiSrv,
Themes, W32Time, winmgmt, wscsvc, wuauserv,
WZCSVC

thats everything connected to svchost

DCOM is listed as an essential service and windows wont let me disable it

when your process is going 50-100% in task manager take a note of the scvhost ID and comapre it to that os

tasklist /svc

you can whittle it then to which services it is

I am putting my money on the svchost which contains

wuauserv

ok, i will thanks very much chan.

i did a massive cleanout today. i cleaned unused programs and got rid of some startup items. apparently your not supposed to use msconfig to configure startup items, it causes numerous problems. so i stopped using it there and removed/edited a bunch of startup items manually and im running much much faster now

during the reboots i noticed that none of processes went over 25% including svchost, but i will keep an eye on it

thanks again to everyone for the help, ill post back if i find some more info

dont use msconfig to remove startup items?

who said that ?

used it for years absolultey fine.

rather configure the software first sure but if it does cause numerous problems I have yet to see any.

well idk, but as soon as i set it to normal boot then turned off startup thru the software, my comp got 3 times faster.....
