Hey guys,

You may have noticed but this site has been getting alot of downtime lately and at our expense. When the server goes down, I cant get information to why the site is down because ecwhost's main site also goes down. Im a sitting duck and the only way I can get information is via MSN which isnt exactly practical especially when the support isnt online.

Ive been looking around and I have found a nice company which ive looked into and they seem a good choice and a few added benefits come along the way. May I just make everyone aware that the site will not change, the only thing that will change is the address, which will be an actual domain such as "www.mysite.com" instead of "www.mysite.thehostsite.com". Anyway, a little information about the new host.

- KR will get a free 15 slot teamspeak server (more slots can be purchased if nescessary).
- They refund for downtime although 99% uptime per month is guarenteed.
- We have 5x more webspace.
- The company have 9 servers opposed to Ecwhost's 1 so there if there is an outage, there is a 1 in 9 chance that it will be the server we are hosted on.
- Its possible that you can all get your own emails at name@ourdomain.com.

Im not knocking Ecwhost at all, but recently we have had so much downtime. To be precise 27 hours since the start of the month, which is 87% considering today is the 10th, that is "crap" of a better word.

Obviously we face alot of work transfering the files, both myself and Craig although I know that I can turn to many people if I need extra help (DJ-Blade for one). We will probably transfer the main site and gallery first, then in turn the forums. Obviously there will probably be about a two hour period where the forums are unaccessible while we transfer the forum database.

Thats some background info for you ;),

Pho~

isnt it wise to build our own html website ??
and then just take a proboards forum ??

cuz with in 4 weeks i get html lessons to build up a site and all the stuff that comes around and a few weeks after that i get lessons in php!!

i am still a noob so .. i dont know if those site also need to be hosted on a server....

but its probebly also a nice way to do it like your post :P

if you need help with something i can perhaps do just ask me ...:P

Eh? I dont understand what you mean Virus.

If you build a HTML site you need to host it from somewhere otherwise it will just be a HTML site sitting on your comp where noone can acsses it.

I thinks thats what you were getting at right?

Well, I think he means that if you have a publically hosted message board, the website's host can go down and the forums will still be operational under another host. I believe that also solves the issue of when a clan member leaves that he or she not take the site AND forums with him/her.

Also, I'm still game for replicating the forums on my webhost if you want a back-up for future outages.

Well i would talk to Pho about that one, but i dont think it will be all that necessary with the new host because they have like zero downtime so its not really needed but still talk to Pho about it he can decide.

sounds good to me, it seems like it costs alot tho, and the site we have now is pretty cool

dont kill urselves trying to get a new site if we dont entirely need it

 #5675  by Craig

No it will be the same site it will just be hosted somewhere different. We are not creating an entirely new site, that would just be stupid lol. We will transfer this site over.

ooo ok, my bad ^^

then go ahead with it, just dont spend too much lol

To be honest Proboards arent very reliable and secondly if we did use them, we would all have to re-register because you cant convert databases to proboards. Also ad's would be a problem.

Anyway, I might still keep Ecwhost running. Its not much a month and that could be used as our back-up if needed. The problem im seeing is the fact that new posts and users would have to be transfered on a regular basis.

May I just make it clear to everyone, that if I ever did leave KR I wouldnt take the site with me. The site would remain KR's I wouldnt take something like that away from a family that has done so much for me.

Also because I will be spending more money on this new host, its very likely that I will be closing down KR2 so that im not spending too much. I dont know whats happening with Nin's servers, but hopefully they will be up soon.

Sorry, that didn't come out right, but there are a lot of other circumstances -- too many to name -- that could prevent you from paying the fees and if we ever lost contact with you and Craig, KR would have to start from scratch or use a template for a new site. Also, there's really no such thing as "zero downtime." It happens eventually, and it's really no problem having me throw up a replication on my webhost. I'm just trying to help save Pho some money. :)

Ourback up boards?

@Tricky - Thanks for the offer ill think about it. Ill wait and see how things go with the transfer. Do you have access to phpmyadmin on your host tricky? Or SQL-manager?

everything needs to be hosted somewhere

and whilst 100% downtime is as u say impossible it can be extremeley iminimised.

I think Chantelle said the problem with the current host as Pho and her talked about it was something that they do nto use fault tolerance which is a prevention against downtime..

 #5737  by Sparky

Yeah didn't we have the old boards as a back up/secondary board for such an occasion?

 #5744  by Chantelle

well if they have the fault tolerance setup rightthey shouldnt have too.

If you pay for a service you want it to be pretty tight.

I mean for all the host company knows this could be Phos business? It could be his source of revenue and his livelyhood.

So for a paid service fault tolerance and quick disater recovery is a major issue..

well i recommended pho a host also :D but i can only reocmmend, chantelle and mel will also tell you we have never really had a downtime longer than an hour :S and tbh if your not online when it happens you wont see it.

I think its best to send backups to tricky or your other host it seems likea good idea, and i wouldnt use pro boards my self, but tricky im sure you host has phpbb forums ? install on fantastico ? if u have cpanelx

But i hope this all goes well for you :D
