my distress about yet MORE comp trouble....

my mom has removed JA due to computer slowness and to free up disk space for a bit. we want to defrag it, but the windows defragger needs 15% open space to run, whihc we dont even have. so essentially its doing absolutely nothing. i was wondering if there is some sort of CD defragger or any other sort of hard media cleanup. free if possible, but if we have to buy it ill tell my ma and maybe she will idk, any help in general with cleaning/removing/making this damn thing work!! would help

thankies

You want to solve your first problem before creating others. Mel has already explained in the previous thread how to find out what is causing the comp to run slow.

yes ive done that. all i need to do now is figure out how to clean the rest of the system. windows has a defragger (im sure most of u know) but it wont run, so is there some sort of CD defragger/cleaner that i can get.....

Well my solution is simple...Throw the damn thing in a river and buy a new one...XD...srry that is not very helpful...

If u have other games on there then delete them! then u should have enough room to defrag...other then that i am no assistance...

Also i would like to say...U BETTER BE ON THIS WEEKEND...XD

ya, thats didnt help in the slightest :D

i wont be on this weekend, JA isnt installed, well i could put it back on, i might be on idk

if you do not have much disk space that is well a good reason for the computer to be extremeley slow, probabaly not the full extent as the other problem I and Mel put up is the way to find out whats causing it.

If your hard drive is Full your RAM needs hard drive space to swap files stored in the RAM..

You need to free up some space simple as...

You can help remove internet files

depending on broswer

Tools options do click to remove all offline files aswell.
To be honest looking for where to salvage disk spac can be not a simple job, sometimes you need to just browse through the drve to find large files or programs.

It sounds to me like your trying to run ahead of the wind.

I think you need to look at your main problem first and or clear some stuff up..

I know my knowledge is sort of lying around teh limits since alot of it is from sister but your not really doing what is suggested to you?

While it may be an answer to easily say sure go ahead wipe and start again its not always teh answer and teh answer is sometimes better to work ot how to fix it.

im not throwing any help away, specialy not urs and chantelles cuz u two are the best of the business here. i could master a full course of IT and still not be better than u. im fairly computer savvy, but wen it comes to certain things, i have no idea wut im doing. u guys have xfire or AIM?? or even emails to kinda get a wlkthru here cuz im pretty much lost

well I dont wish to take credit for that or considreed to be of that presteige, not yet anyway lol Im just a starter in the IT world

your better off speaking to Chantelle shes the one with the Carrear and teh Certification..

you could purchase a maybe 80-160 gb or bigger hard drive and install that as your secondary drive, this would allow you to easily get loads more room on your pc.

 #4823  by Grimm

i dont think my comp has a bay for a secondary drive in the case, it would have to be external, and if i could get in the case, i dont have the tools to do it safely so i dont damage the thing (although, going in without static protection wouldnt damage it more than it already is  )

 #4824  by Scythe

tools to do it safely? there really isn't much to it... u don't really need any special tools

 #4863  by Grimm

ESD strap if u wanna be extra careful/geeky :)

 #4873  by Melissa

while swapping programs may help alleviate your existing problem of space u still need to sort out your boot problem

btw you can screen / secure it in so you can even put it on a cd rom shelve.

I think u are suppose to use anti static bands although if i were honest I think aslong as you earth yourself first you shoudl be okay?

 #4941  by Starcomand

lol i build comps and never use the bands etc lol

 #4994  by Chantelle

same as

I must have build 50+ computers and 10+ servers I never use one.. and when changing something over half teh time , time is pressed against me so i dive in... you'll be fine so just do it.

besides if your adding a hard drive u hardly touch the motherboard if at all.

 #4997  by Phoenix

Well as long as your careful with what you touch, and know what your doing there shouldnt be a problem. I use the bands if im doing anything inside my comp however, I'd rarther be safe then sorry.

 #5001  by Tricky

Yeh, I've got like twelve or so under my belt. I wouldn't bother with the bands. That's more if you're working on carpet. If that's the case, I suggest you either move somewhere else or put on sneakers. Like Chan said, if it's an HDD, it's a matter of unscrewing and screwing, and two plugs, you shouldn't have any issues.

 #5004  by Chantelle

yeah and you can always earther yourself first my touching a metal object.. i think thats a good idea actually about teh carpet .. do it on a table top!!

oh and if your boxis full of dust do not stick the hoover/ vaccum cleaner in what so ever.

 #5022  by Phoenix

<-- Has a compressed air bottle, im prepared xD

 #5058  by Grimm

thats probly another problem, weve had this comp i think 2 years and never touched the inside, it porbly needs work

i keep getting a message saying "low virtual memory" wil installing more RAM help this? if so, i think i can get RAM from my skool. and, if i were to pull the ram out of a skool comp, will it be empty? or have tons of shit in that would just go onto my comp?

 #5065  by Squall

another way of getting rid of a load of space is to go to c drive and then clean disk but instead of just doing the first option click the tab at the top and clean system restores untill the latest one, normally people put on maximum space to restore which is around 1200mb a restore so clearing up alot of them would release alot of space, then defragging :D but i hate defragging.

 #5086  by Chantelle

low virtual memory.. well to be honest its 2 things

firstly the main cause is actually stemming from low disk space.. its not your ram tahts packing up RAM uses free disk space to copy to called page file.

Increasing your RAM will mean less need for page file to be used HOWEVER... the amount of disk space required for paging depends on your RAM size..

It is recommended that 1.5-3 times teh size of your RAM is needed to be allocated to page file..

So either way your first step is to loosen up the space available

I know that guy from SLS said put in more RAM which ultimateley is never a bad idea but he hadnt thought it through first..

an idea may be as suggested installing a new drive and transfering programs games and music to there
